Y Tu Mamá También

Alfonso Cuarón's Monumental Coming-of-Age Journey 7/25 & 7/26

Alfonso Cuarón's breakout film is a Rabelaisian tragicomedy in the guise of a road movie. Two teens (Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal) are off to a distant beach in the company of an older (in her late twenties!) woman (Maribel Verdú) who is nursing a broken heart and a dark secret. The sex, drugs and white line fever are just so many McGuffins strewn about by Cuarón in this cautionary tale of growing up abruptly in Mexico at the end of the 20th century. One of the most successful foreign films of its day, Y Tu Mamá También catapulted director Cuarón and co-stars Luna and García Bernal to international stardom. Nominated for a Golden Globe (Best Foreign Language Film) and a Best Original Screenplay Oscar, it was a critical favorite as well. "The funniest and most erotically charged road movie since Bertrand Blier's Going Places," wrote Peter Rainer in New York magazine. "The movie is fast, funny, unafraid of sexuality and finally devastating," added A.O. Scott of The New York Times. And Jonathan Rosenbaum in The Chicago Reader put it succinctly: "A genuine rarity: a sex comedy with brains."

MATINEE ESSENTIALS is the title of our Saturday and Sunday 1 pm series, interrupted only by special presentations. The criteria is simple: without exception, these are movies no serious filmgoer should do without.

Mexico, 2001, 106 min, 2k DCP, Dir. Alfonso Cuarón, Rated R for strong sexual content, drug use and language, Spanish with English subtitles
