Coral Gables Art Cinema Receives Knight Foundation Grant To Expand Programs

Cinema Launching Children's Film Festival And Filmmaking Development Project

Coral Gables Art Cinema will receive advancement funds to enrich Miami's film scene, it was announced on December 3, with a three-year grant of $150,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge. Funds, which require a 1:1 match by the Cinema, will be used to enhance programming, create educational activities and further develop the venue as a local cultural hub. Since launching in October 2010, the Gables Cinema has become one of the leading first-run alternative movie theater and film arts center in South Florida. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Knight Arts Challenge aims to bring South Florida together through the arts. "The explosion of independent cinema in Miami shows that there's a great hunger for it. The Coral Gables theater will help meet that need by expanding in ways that engage new and loyal audiences," said Dennis Scholl, vice president for Arts at Knight Foundation.

Grant funds will specifically be used to extend the Cinema's successes and build long-term stabilization. The unique and culturally diverse film programing and educational activities will be expanded to include a number of new components. These include a three-day annual film festival as part of existing family programming, in partnership with the New York International Children's Film Festival, along with educational activities; and launching of new initiatives to support feature film production and distribution, including visiting director, screenwriter and producer residencies, in conjunction with existing exhibition programs.

"The Miami arts landscape has seen tremendous growth in the last decade, in part because of the generous support from the Knight Foundation. Thanks to their new grant to the Gables Cinema, we are also now poised to expand what we do," said Founder and President of of the Coral Gables Art Cinema, Steven Krams. "We are clearly filling a need in the community for the kind of diverse, multicultural, internationally recognized films we have been screening at our venue," added Robert Rosenberg, Cinema Director.
